A new destination in the Norwich Lanes is combining professional hairdressing, specialty coffee, wellness and local design, offering a fresh take on the traditional salon experience.

Tucked into Pottergate in the heart of the Norwich Lanes, norðfolk is bringing together several elements of modern lifestyle under one roof. Part hair studio, part coffee bar and part lifestyle space, the destination has been created to offer customers something beyond the traditional salon visit, combining professional hairdressing with a relaxed environment where people can also enjoy coffee, wellness drinks, design and conversation.
Located at 20 Pottergate, Norwich NR2 1DX, the space has been designed as a place where customers can spend time rather than simply arrive for an appointment and leave. The downstairs area incorporates a lifestyle store, lounge and wellness coffee bar, while the first floor is dedicated to the hair studio, creating a natural separation between the social and professional sides of the business.

The location itself plays an important part in the identity of norðfolk. Pottergate and the surrounding Norwich Lanes are known for their independent businesses, creative spaces and distinctive character, making the area a natural setting for a concept that brings together hair, hospitality, retail and design. The interior reflects that independent spirit while maintaining a carefully considered contemporary feel.
The design takes inspiration from Scandinavian interiors and the relaxed aesthetic associated with Soho House, combining clean lines, natural textures and understated styling with artwork and homeware from Norfolk. Rather than creating a conventional salon environment, norðfolk has been designed to feel more like a lifestyle space, with different areas encouraging customers to sit, browse, drink and take in their surroundings.

At the centre of the downstairs experience is the wellness coffee bar, which has been developed in partnership with Grind London. Alongside specialty coffee, customers can choose from a selection of wellness-focused drinks including matcha and blue spirulina chai, with the menu designed to complement the wider atmosphere of the space. Selected cocktails also form part of the offering, giving the venue flexibility beyond the traditional daytime coffee bar.

The coffee operation is overseen by Stuart Finch, whose experience includes working in Byron Bay, Australia. His background brings another layer to the café side of the business, with the emphasis placed on quality coffee, considered preparation and drinks that fit naturally into the lifestyle-led character of norðfolk.

That combination is central to the concept. Customers might arrive for a haircut or colour appointment, but the experience is designed to extend beyond the chair. The downstairs lounge and coffee bar provide somewhere to meet friends, enjoy a drink or simply spend some time before or after an appointment, while the lifestyle store adds another dimension through its selection of products and design pieces.
The first floor provides a very different atmosphere, with the dedicated hair studio focusing on professional cutting, bespoke colouring, styling and treatments. The salon works with established professional brands including L’Oréal, combining contemporary hairdressing with the more relaxed surroundings that define the wider norðfolk experience.

Studio supervisor and experienced stylist Caris Hansell is an important part of the hairdressing team, helping to oversee the studio and its day-to-day customer experience. Her role reflects the emphasis norðfolk places on combining professional expertise with a welcoming environment, ensuring that the hair studio remains at the heart of the business.
The concept has been created by married hairdressers Sam Taylor-Bird and Paul Taylor-Bird, who have brought their experience of the industry together with a broader vision for how a modern salon can operate. Their approach moves away from viewing a hair appointment as an isolated service and instead creates a destination where beauty, hospitality, design and wellbeing can exist alongside one another.
There is also a strong local element to the project. While the inspiration draws on international influences such as Scandinavian design, Soho House and Byron Bay coffee culture, norðfolk has been shaped around its Norwich location. Norfolk artwork, homeware and the character of the Norwich Lanes help give the space its own identity rather than making it feel like a concept transplanted from elsewhere.
For customers, that creates a more flexible experience. Someone may visit specifically for a haircut, while another customer may be drawn in by the coffee bar, lifestyle store or design of the space. The different elements have been deliberately brought together so that norðfolk can work as both a professional destination and a place to spend time.
In a part of Norwich increasingly recognised for independent businesses and creative ideas, the arrival of norðfolk adds another distinctive concept to the Norwich Lanes. By bringing together hairdressing, specialty coffee, wellness and lifestyle retail, it offers an alternative interpretation of what a modern salon can be.
At its core, norðfolk is about creating an environment where professional hairdressing sits comfortably alongside hospitality and design. It is a concept that reflects the changing expectations of customers, while retaining the personal service and expertise that remain central to a successful independent salon.
