There may be trouble ahead, but while there’s moonlight, music and romance, Norwich audiences are invited to face the music and dance as Top Hat arrives in the city this March.
Playing at Norwich Theatre from 24 to 28 March, this dazzling stage adaptation of the beloved 1935 film brings golden age glamour, high stepping choreography and some of the most treasured songs in musical theatre to the heart of Norfolk.
Described as the musical equivalent of the finest vintage champagne, Top Hat is effervescent, elegant and utterly exhilarating. Audiences can expect sparklingly witty dialogue, lavish sets, gorgeous costumes and showstopping dance numbers that capture the timeless magic of Hollywood’s golden era.
Featuring Irving Berlin’s irresistible score, the show includes classics such as Cheek to Cheek, Let’s Face the Music and Dance, Top Hat White Tie and Tails and Puttin’ on the Ritz. Each number is delivered with style and flair, blending romance and comedy with breathtaking choreography.
The story follows Broadway sensation Jerry Travers, who arrives in London to open a new show. When his late night tap dancing disrupts the sleep of model Dale Tremont in the suite below, it sparks a chain of events filled with misunderstandings, mistaken identity and romantic chaos. Instantly captivated, Jerry is determined to win Dale’s heart. However, she has confused him with his producer Horace, whose own complicated marital situation adds further fuel to the farce. Throw in an impassioned Italian admirer with dreams of whisking Dale away to Venice, and the path to true love becomes anything but straightforward.
Based on the iconic RKO film that originally starred Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, the stage adaptation has enjoyed critical acclaim since its West End premiere. The production won the 2013 Olivier Award for Best New Musical and the Evening Standard Award for Best Night Out, cementing its place as one of the most stylish and entertaining revivals of recent years.
This new UK production is staged by acclaimed American director and choreographer Kathleen Marshall, whose award winning revival of Anything Goes delighted London audiences and television viewers alike. Her signature blend of classic showmanship and contemporary polish ensures Top Hat feels both nostalgically glamorous and freshly vibrant.
With a running time of approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes including an interval, the production promises a full evening of escapist entertainment. From sweeping ballroom sequences to crisp tap routines, every moment is crafted to transport audiences into a world of art deco elegance and romantic intrigue.
Ticket prices range from £18 to £60, making it an accessible treat whether you are planning a special night out, a theatre date or simply an evening immersed in song and dance.
For those who love classic musical theatre, golden age Hollywood style or simply a thoroughly uplifting night at the theatre, Top Hat at Norwich Theatre is set to be one of the standout events of the spring season.
