Theatre Royal Norwich is once again bringing festive magic to the stage, this year with a charming and joy filled production of Cinderella. It is one of those pantomimes that captures everything you want from a Christmas outing in Norfolk. Warmth, laughter, music, personality and a wonderfully nostalgic sense of celebration that reminds you why panto season is still such a treasured tradition.
At the heart of this year’s show is Georgia May Foote, well loved for roles in Coronation Street and Strictly Come Dancing. She steps into the glass slippers as Cinderella with real charm, giving the character a gentle spirit and a hopeful outlook that instantly draws you in. In this retelling, Cinderella dreams of escaping the routine of life at a seaside hotel where she works tirelessly for her demanding stepsisters. It is a setting that feels both fresh and familiar, and makes her transformation even more heartwarming.
Cinderella is not alone though, because by her side is Buttons, played by Joe Tracini who is also this year’s pantomime writer. Joe is a Norwich favourite and brings infectious energy to the role. His warmth, humour and naturally playful timing make him the perfect best friend for Cinderella, always helping to lift her spirits when the wicked sisters push her too far. Their friendship is one of the loveliest threads in the show and creates a real sense of heart beneath the comedy.
Of course, every panto needs its troublemakers, and this production delivers them in style. The wicked sisters are brought to life by Kenny Moore, a Norfolk drag legend, and Owen Evans from The Nimmo Twins. Together they create a fabulous mix of mischief, chaos and irresistible silliness. They clatter around the stage with towering personalities, outrageous costumes and a comic rhythm that keeps the audience laughing from start to finish. Their antics are exactly the sort of thing that makes panto such a joy. Big, bold and brilliantly over the top.
Prince Charming enters the story with his own twist. Played by Danny Hatchard from Eastenders, he is a prince with dreams that reach beyond royal duty. He and his loyal assistant Dandini, played by Jeevan Braich of Starlight Express, bring a modern spark to the story. Their partnership is full of fun, friendship and memorable musical moments, and their scenes add a lively pace to the storyline as they search not only for the princess to steal the prince’s heart, but also for their own ambitions to flourish.
Magic is never far away in this production, thanks to the wonderful presence of Hannah Jane Fox as the Fairy Godmother. Known for We Will Rock You, she brings shimmering charm and theatrical flair to every appearance. Her scenes glisten with festive sparkle and she guides Cinderella through her journey of hope, transformation and a little bit of glittering enchantment. It is one of those performances that radiates joy and keeps the younger audience members utterly captivated.
All the classic moments you expect from Cinderella are lovingly delivered. The pumpkin, the ball, the gown, the midnight dash and of course the glass slipper. Yet the production still finds ways to feel fresh, modern and full of local touches. The humour is playful but never overwhelming, with jokes that land beautifully for adults as well as children. The music is uplifting, the choreography brims with life and the staging captures a wonderful mix of seaside charm, fairytale elegance and sparkling festive delight.
As with any good pantomime, audience participation is part of the fun. There are plenty of chances to cheer, sing, hiss at the villains and shout out the lines that everyone secretly loves. The atmosphere inside Theatre Royal Norwich becomes electric, full of laughter that rolls across the auditorium and brings families, friends and festive visitors together in shared joy. It is impossible not to get swept up in it.
