17 March – 21 March
Murder is returning to the countryside, and this time it is stepping onto the stage at Norwich Theatre. The world premiere of The Killings at Badger’s Drift brings the much loved world of Midsomer Murders to life in a gripping theatrical adaptation that promises suspense, intrigue and a touch of classic British eccentricity.
For fans of the long running television favourite, this new production offers the chance to experience the mystery in a completely different way. Based on Caroline Graham’s original novel and the hugely successful television series produced by Bentley Productions, the stage version captures the wit, charm and chilling twists that have made Midsomer Murders a household name.
The story begins in the picturesque village of Badger’s Drift, where well known spinster Emily Simpson is discovered dead. While her passing is initially thought to be accidental, her friend Lucy Bellringer is not convinced. Soon DCI Tom Barnaby and Sergeant Gavin Troy are called in to investigate, and what unfolds is a web of hidden passions, long buried secrets and simmering rivalries beneath the village’s idyllic exterior.
Audiences can expect all the hallmarks of a classic whodunnit. There are eccentric villagers with something to hide, suspicious encounters in drawing rooms and gardens, and a steady build of tension that leads to an unforgettable reveal. It is the kind of storytelling that keeps you guessing until the very end, making it perfect for a theatre night out with friends or family.
Adding to the excitement is the return of Daniel Casey to the world of Midsomer. Known to many as the original Sergeant Troy in the ITV series, he now steps into the role of Inspector Tom Barnaby for the stage adaptation. It is a full circle moment that will delight long time fans of the show. Daniel brings with him a wealth of experience from both television and theatre, with recent screen appearances in Emmerdale, EastEnders and Coronation Street, alongside stage roles in productions such as Yes, Prime Minister, Abigail’s Party and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time.
Written and directed by Guy Unsworth, this theatrical adaptation makes full use of the live setting to heighten suspense and drama. Norwich Theatre provides the perfect backdrop for an evening in England’s deadliest county, especially for audiences who know just how charming village life in Norfolk can be.
The show runs for approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, including an interval, giving audiences plenty of time to immerse themselves in the twists and turns of the investigation. Ticket prices range from £15 to £52, offering options to suit a variety of budgets. The production carries an age recommendation of 12 plus, with parental guidance advised.
Beyond the central murder plot, The Killings at Badger’s Drift offers sharp character observations and a wry look at village life. Beneath the surface politeness and manicured gardens lies a world of complex relationships and simmering tensions. It is this contrast between outward tranquillity and inner turmoil that has always defined Midsomer Murders and continues to captivate audiences.
As the lights dim and the investigation begins, Norwich Theatre audiences can expect an evening filled with intrigue, drama and that unmistakable blend of comfort and suspense that has made the series a British classic.
Spend an evening in England’s most dangerous county and see if you can uncover the truth before Barnaby does.
