Tucked away on the edge of Lynford Arboretum in Thetford Forest, Shepherds Baa has quickly become one of Norfolk’s most inviting countryside destinations. Surrounded by towering trees, walking trails and the tranquil scenery of Lynford Lakes, this café offers exactly what visitors hope to find after a woodland adventure: quality coffee, homemade food and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that encourages you to linger.

The story behind Shepherds Baa is as appealing as its setting. Since purchasing Lynford Gardens in 2011, husband and wife team Mel and Chris Tilley have worked tirelessly to restore what was once a neglected and forgotten part of Norfolk. The former Lynford Hall gardens and gardeners’ cottages have been carefully brought back to life, creating a place that is both beautiful and full of character.
The Tilleys run their Clayland Land and Country Homes business from the former greenhouse, now named The Glass House, and live on site in the Head Gardener’s Cottage with their youngest son Toby and three dogs, Morgan, Gypsy and Teddy. Previously derelict cottages have been converted into holiday lets on Airbnb, and in spring visitors can enjoy a wildflower field along the Arboretum pathways, another testament to their dedication and vision.
The café itself began in 2021 during lockdown, almost as a side project. The couple built a Shepherds hut and opened a small café on site, not realising how popular it would become. Having never run a café before, the experience has been a steep learning curve, yet it has turned into a thriving destination for walkers, cyclists, bird watchers and families exploring the forest.

The café’s location is ideal for enjoying the surrounding countryside. Trails around Lynford Arboretum and Lynford Lakes make it a perfect stop for those seeking fresh air and outdoor activity. There is even a dog agility course nearby, making it especially popular with visitors bringing their pets along for the day.
Inside, the pub-style hut is welcoming and relaxed. The seating is comfortable and informal, while large windows allow plenty of natural light and provide views of the surrounding woodland. Outdoor seating is available for those wanting to enjoy their drinks and food among the trees, perfect for sunny spring and summer days.

Following its success, the café was expanded in 2025, creating a larger space to accommodate more guests while keeping the friendly and inviting atmosphere intact. The focus remains on creating a place where people want to spend time, whether stopping by for a quick drink or lingering over a light lunch.
Food and drink are central to the experience. Luca Pizza provides freshly made pizzas, while the menu also includes sandwiches, sausage baps, hot chocolate, homemade cakes and specialty coffee. Local ingredients are used wherever possible, supporting Norfolk producers and enhancing the quality of every dish and drink served.

The team working at Shepherds Baa adds to the welcoming environment, making service personal and attentive without ever feeling rushed. Dogs are especially well catered for, with treats available and plenty of space to relax, making the café one of the most popular dog-friendly spots in the area.
Part of Shepherds Baa’s charm is its sense of discovery. While it has grown in popularity, it still feels like a hidden gem in the forest. Visitors often arrive expecting a quick coffee and end up staying longer to enjoy the atmosphere, the scenery and the friendly energy of the place.
In a county known for its independent cafés and scenic beauty, Shepherds Baa stands out for combining both effortlessly. It highlights the growing appeal of countryside cafés that put hospitality, nature and quality food at the heart of the experience.
For anyone exploring Thetford Forest or looking for a memorable rural stop, Shepherds Baa is a must-visit. Whether for morning coffee, a light lunch, or a relaxing pause during a walk, it offers the perfect combination of good food, fresh air and friendly hospitality in the heart of Norfolk.
