Norwich has plenty of burger spots, but Bun X has built a following by doing things its own way. Known for smashed beef patties, loaded burgers, indulgent sides and its famous feast trays, the brand has grown from a kitchen pop-up into one of the city’s best-known names for comfort food.

At the centre of the Bun X story is owner Jeff Taylor, who officially took over the lease of Micawbers Tavern on Pottergate in March 2026. After almost three years of operating from the pub’s kitchen, taking on the venue marked a major milestone for the business and gave Bun X a permanent home for its flagship operation.

Micawbers Tavern is a natural fit. Tucked into Norwich’s Pottergate and Cow Hill quarter, the pub has a traditional, cosy atmosphere, complete with wooden beams, low ceilings and plenty of character. Inside, Bun X has created a relaxed setting where customers can settle in for a burger, a few sides and one of its famously generous sharing feasts.

The burgers themselves are at the heart of the menu. Bun X specialises in smashed patties, with the cooking method creating those crisp, caramelised edges while keeping the centre juicy and full of flavour. From classic combinations to more extravagant creations, the menu is designed for diners who like their burgers substantial.
The BDC is a particular favourite, combining two 100g beef patties with four slices of melted Cheddar and American cheese, bacon, pickled red onions and house burger sauce. It is rich, messy and exactly what you want from a proper burger.

For those looking to go even bigger, the Carvery Beast takes the indulgence further. Double smashed patties are layered with American cheese, BX mayo and pickles before being topped with a choice of belly pork or roast beef. It is a burger that feels more like an event than a quick lunch.
Then there are the OG Mega Feasts, which have become a signature of the Bun X experience. Designed for sharing, the £42 feast includes two house burgers, fries and a side, offering plenty of food for two people and a chance to sample more of the menu in one sitting.

The sides are equally important to the Bun X formula. Fried chicken, loaded fries and other indulgent creations complement the burgers, giving customers plenty of reasons to turn a simple meal into a full-on feast.
Bun X has also expanded its Norwich presence. Big Micky’s Bun X-press on Magdalen Street brings the brand to the NR3 area with a more streamlined takeaway and delivery-focused offering, while Bun X also has a residency at The Coach & Horses on Thorpe Road.
Despite its growing footprint, Micawbers remains an important part of the brand. There is something particularly appealing about pairing an ambitious burger menu with the atmosphere of a traditional Norwich pub. It gives the experience a local character that a conventional burger restaurant simply cannot replicate.
Part of Bun X’s appeal is its sense of fun. The menu does not take itself too seriously, the portions are generous and the food is designed to be enjoyed rather than delicately picked apart. It is comfort food at its most unapologetic, with plenty of cheese, sauce, crispy edges and toppings packed into every burger.
That approach has clearly struck a chord. Bun X has developed from a successful pop-up into a growing local brand while retaining the energy and personality that helped establish its reputation in the first place.
Whether you consider it the best burger in Norwich will always be a matter of personal taste, but Bun X has certainly earned its place in the city’s burger conversation. With Jeff Taylor at the helm and Micawbers Tavern now firmly established as its home, the brand looks set to remain a favourite for Norwich diners with a serious appetite.
