Norwich is no stranger to independent venues with personality, but every now and then somewhere comes along that feels instantly part of the furniture. Dick’s Café Bar is one of those places. Tucked into the ever popular Norwich Lanes, it has quickly built a reputation as a relaxed, welcoming spot that effortlessly blends good food, strong drinks and an easy going atmosphere.

The story behind Dick’s Café Bar is part of its charm. The venue was brought to life by two friends, Tom and Andy, who share a genuine love for hospitality. After taking over the building in the summer of 2023, they set about transforming the space with a clear vision in mind. The name itself is a nod to family, taken from Tom’s uncle who had owned the building for years. That personal connection seems to have carried through into the feel of the place, giving it a sense of warmth that is hard to fake.
At the same time, the kitchen is driven by serious experience. Joseph and Shannon, who are at the heart of the food offering, took a less traditional route into the industry. After leaving corporate careers behind, they spent several years travelling across America, working in a range of restaurants and learning the ropes from the ground up. That hands on experience has shaped much of what you see on the menu today.

Back in Norwich, Shannon continued to develop her passion for baking, while Joseph refined his skills in local kitchens and even spent time working as a butcher. Together, they have brought all of that knowledge into Dick’s Café Bar, creating a menu that feels confident and well thought out without ever becoming overcomplicated.
The result is a venue that moves seamlessly through the day. In the morning and early afternoon, it has the feel of a laid back café, with a strong coffee offering and a brunch menu that encourages you to take your time. Bagels are a standout, with a variety of fillings that make them just as suitable for a quick bite as they are for a more leisurely catch up. Pancakes, eggs and fresh salads round things out, giving plenty of choice without overwhelming the menu.
As the day goes on, the atmosphere begins to shift. By the evening, Dick’s settles into its role as a low lit bar with a buzz that builds steadily as the night progresses. The transition feels natural rather than forced, which is part of what makes the place so appealing. You can arrive for coffee and end up staying for cocktails without ever feeling out of place.

The dinner menu leans heavily into American inspired comfort food, and it does so with confidence. Burgers are a major draw, widely considered among the best in the city, while hot dogs and wings add to the sense of indulgence. There is a clear attention to flavour and balance, with sides that are just as tempting as the main dishes. Tater tots, chicharrónes and rich, cheesy macaroni all make an appearance, offering the kind of food that is designed to be shared and enjoyed.

Importantly, the menu does not leave anyone out. There are options for children as well as plant based choices, making it a place that works for a wide range of diners. It is another small detail that reflects the inclusive, welcoming feel of the venue as a whole.
Drinks play an equally important role. Coffee is taken seriously during the day, while the evening brings a selection of cocktails and beers that lean into bold flavours and a slightly playful edge. It all adds to the sense that Dick’s Café Bar is somewhere you can rely on, whatever time you visit.
What really stands out, though, is the atmosphere. The Norwich Lanes have long been known for their independent spirit, and Dick’s fits right into that world. There is a relaxed confidence to the space, helped along by a friendly team who make an effort to ensure people feel comfortable from the moment they walk in.
It is this balance that has helped Dick’s Café Bar quickly become a favourite. It does not try too hard, but it clearly cares about what it is doing. From the food and drink to the overall vibe, everything feels considered without losing its sense of fun.
In a city full of great places to eat and drink, standing out is no easy task. Yet Dick’s Café Bar has managed to do just that, carving out its own space in Norwich’s ever evolving hospitality scene.
If you have not stopped by yet, it is well worth adding to your list.
