Standing proudly in the centre of the picturesque village of Great Massingham, The Dabbling Duck has become one of Norfolk’s most loved country pubs. Combining relaxed dining, stylish accommodation and a genuine connection to the local community, the family run pub continues to attract visitors from across the county and beyond.

This year marks a particularly special milestone for the business as The Dabbling Duck celebrates its 20th anniversary. Over the last two decades, the pub has built a strong reputation for warm hospitality, excellent food and creating the kind of atmosphere that keeps both locals and returning visitors coming back time and time again.
Surrounded by beautiful countryside and located just a short drive from the North Norfolk coast, The Dabbling Duck perfectly captures the charm of a traditional British country pub while still offering a more elevated and contemporary experience. From the outside, the pub blends naturally into the village setting, while inside guests are welcomed by cosy interiors, rustic styling and a lively atmosphere centred around a proper pub bar.

At the heart of the business is husband and wife team Mark and Sally Dobby, whose combined experience within hospitality has helped shape the pub into the destination it is today. Mark is well known within Norfolk’s hospitality scene, while Sally has played a major role in developing the interiors and overall design of the accommodation spaces, most recently through the refurbishment of Barrack House.
Food remains a major part of The Dabbling Duck’s appeal. The menus focus heavily on local Norfolk produce, with an emphasis on quality ingredients and seasonal cooking. Guests can expect a balance of comforting pub classics alongside more refined dishes, particularly showcasing local beef and game wherever possible.

The relaxed atmosphere is part of what makes the pub so popular. Whether stopping by for a casual lunch, a Sunday roast, an evening meal or drinks with friends, the setting feels welcoming without ever becoming overly formal. Local ales, carefully selected wines and the pub’s own signature Mucky Duck gin all contribute to the experience.
The pub’s wood fired pizzas have also become a favourite with visitors, served on Fridays and Saturdays from the oak barn area that works equally well indoors and outdoors depending on the season. Throughout the year, The Dabbling Duck also hosts a variety of popular events, including steak nights and its much loved seafood festival held every November.

Accommodation has become another important part of the business, allowing guests to turn a visit into a longer countryside escape. The pub now offers 13 rooms across a range of styles, from cosy pub rooms full of traditional country charm to larger boutique style spaces designed for families, couples and dog owners.

One of the standout additions in recent years has been Barrack House, the beautifully refurbished property located adjacent to the pub. The house adds four premium rooms to the accommodation offering, each individually designed with contemporary interiors and thoughtful details that create a calm and luxurious atmosphere.

Barrack House also includes a resident’s lounge, courtyard garden and conference space, making it appealing not only for leisure stays but also for private events, business meetings and larger group bookings. For guests looking for even more flexibility, the nearby Duckling Cottage offers a charming self catering option just a few doors away from the pub itself.
Despite its growth and popularity, The Dabbling Duck has retained a genuine sense of community. Much of the team is local, with several staff members coming directly from Great Massingham itself. Head Chef Dale Smith has also become a key part of the pub’s success over the last five years, helping continue the kitchen’s focus on high quality seasonal food.
Then there is Doris Dobby, the pub’s black Labrador and unofficial member of the team, who has become a familiar face to many returning guests.
Part of what makes The Dabbling Duck so appealing is that it never loses sight of what people love most about great country pubs. There is comfort, character and personality in every part of the experience, whether enjoying dinner beside the fire, staying overnight after a coastal day out or simply stopping in for a pint after a countryside walk.
As it celebrates 20 years in business, The Dabbling Duck continues to prove why it remains one of Norfolk’s standout hospitality destinations. A pub deeply connected to its village, passionate about local produce and built around genuine hospitality, it represents the very best of the county’s thriving food and accommodation scene.
