Norwich’s Millennium Library is set to undergo a significant £1 million refurbishment in 2026, marking its 25th anniversary. Located within The Forum, this library has been a cornerstone of the community, welcoming over a million visitors every year. The upcoming renovation aims to enhance the library’s accessibility, functionality, and overall visitor experience. Plans include redesigning the early years library, creating dedicated spaces for children aged 8 and above, and establishing a new teen area, each with its own unique identity. A bookshop-style entrance will make browsing easier, and additional study spaces, particularly on the first floor, will be added, all based on feedback from library users.
Accessibility is a key focus of the refurbishment. Visitors can expect lower shelving units, improved signage, and better wayfinding to create a more inclusive environment. Enhanced lighting, new furniture with built-in power points, and a new gathering space for events and talks are also part of the plans. These improvements are designed to ensure that every visitor, whether coming to read, study, or attend a community event, can fully enjoy the library.

The Millennium Library first opened in 2001 as part of The Forum, replacing the original Norwich Central Library, which was destroyed by fire in 1994. Since then, it has grown into one of the busiest public libraries in the UK, offering a wide range of services and resources to the Norwich community. This refurbishment celebrates that legacy while preparing the library for the next generation of users.

To involve the public in the process, proposed designs will be displayed at the entrance of the Millennium Library from 27 October to 3 November 2025. Members of the project team will be available during this period to discuss the plans and answer questions, giving visitors a chance to see how the library will evolve and to share their thoughts.
This £1 million investment underlines a commitment to providing a modern, accessible, and community-focused space for learning, engagement, and creativity. As the Millennium Library approaches its 25th anniversary, this refurbishment ensures that it will remain a vital resource and a welcoming hub for future generations of Norwich residents and visitors.
